The hotel room.

We had our rehearsal & dinner on Thursday and the girls got their nails done on Friday afternoon... and quickly after, we went to the hotel to check-in.

And that's where we had a little incident. At the time... a few tears were shed (out of frustration!) but looking back it really wasn't a big deal. See -- we had booked the girls a suite for Friday night AND the boys a suite for Friday night. Turns out -- the hotel doesn't actually have "suites" as much as they have "business suites" (even though they claimed they did), but there's a difference.

Especially when you're looking for space for 8 people to sleep and get ready the next day! So it was a little issue to change rooms. We ended up getting the girls adjoining rooms and the boys adjoining rooms and it worked out very well.

My bridesmaids were pretty sneaky and ended up having the room decorated after the fiasco. It was perfect.

After hanging out and relaxing for a while, I took a shower crawled into bed and guess what was on the movie channel?... Eclipse. It was true perfection.

Catch-up & framed signs

3 days away. We may have to do this in bullet form:

- I woke up Sunday/Morning morning at 1 AM and couldn't close my EYE! A 3 hour trip to the emergency room (that's right, during wedding week!) concluded I scratched my cornea. WHAT THE HECK!? Thankfully (luckily?) the antibiotics are done and the eye looks as good as new!

- We have a couples massage scheduled for today!

- We picked up Sean's tux on Monday and it looks great! A couple things were long/short, big/small but they were able to fix it right then and there.

- My dress is being picked up today. :)

Now here are some DIY projects?

I wanted table frames for our photo booth, our guest book, and our card box.

I bought frames from Michaels, they were on sale for cheap, and then just printed signs off the computer. I decided to write the same thing in English and in Spanish since half my family speaks both. :)

Sean's friend/groomsman made us a guitar guest book. Here it is a few weeks ago... (not finished yet):

And lastly:

I thought it'd be cute to have a guitar case to put all wedding cards in...

:)

Busy! Busy!

7.03.2011

Weekend Fun.

Today, I finalized everything with the florist. It's pretty relieving to get things done and know that flowers (and other things) will actually be showing up the day of.

I got some other things done today, and one of those things was to put together these little treats. :)

I wanted to make sure the centerpieces go home with someone (assuming someone wants them) and the way we're going to do that is sometime during the night the DJ will announce to everyone to check underneath their chair. One chair at each table with have a small pink envelope (from Paper Source) taped to it.

I special ordered black guitar picks (since Sean is a guitarist) and put one pick in each envelope:

:) I really love how they came out. So the person who has the envelope will get the first "pick" (!) to see if they want the flowers... if not, I suppose they could then offer them up to anyone else who may want them.

Happy 4th of July!

7.02.2011

14 days.

Okay, so 2 weeks from right now... (I'll hopefully be getting my beauty rest) but when I wake up it'll be my wedding day. It's a little weird.

And, even though I'm constantly doing things (that I don't have time to blog about) I find myself ONLY wanting to blog about things... that I really want to keep secret -- like song choices, my dress, gifts, really cute things.

It's probably normal. Maybe?

I just want to share!

This weekend/within the next week this is the plan:

Rehearsal/rehearsal dinner dress
Confirm with bakery, florist, transportation
Final payments for vendors
Organize all my stuff
Continue writing thank you cards for gifts we've received

:) I had my final fitting today. My dress looks GREAT and I left it there so they could steam it.

I'm pretty excited to be able to say that I'm getting married THIS month. Seriously.

6.27.2011

We're in the teens.

The teens, ladies. That means less than 20 days until the big one. Crazy? Yes.

Last Thursday, was our four year anniversary. ;) and how fitting that we went to the town hall and filed for our marriage license on the same day?!

This has to be quick, because I'm super exhausted -- remember how I told you I started an intense training program this week. Well, today was the first day. It takes 1.5 hours to get there, it lasts for 9 hours and then takes almost 2 hours to get home. :( but it's enjoyable and without the commute it'd be perfect.

I'm trying to think of things that I've been doing... and honestly -- there's so much it's hard to remember. I don't know that I'll have time this week to show all the DIY projects but hopefully this weekend there will be time.

Goodnight!

Something blue...

I knew I wanted my something blue to be my name & wedding date embroidered in my dress. So, when I was at Michaels one of the last 50 times I bought a .59 cent small white canvas type fabric and brought it to the mall -- to Lids to be exact.

You know Lids, the store with all the hats?! Well, they have an embroidering machine and blue thread. ;)

They asked me what I wanted:

Set it all up in their machine:

And a few minutes [and $9 later] I had this beauty:

Now, all I have to do is cut it down and pin it into my dress! Yay!

6.22.2011

Almost...

Okay, first things first. The progress on my to-do list has been continuing. Here it is:

Monday AKA today:
1. Go to the mall to pick up our engraved wine glasses for our wine box ceremony and have my name and wedding date embroidered on a piece of fabric for my dress and look for a rehearsal dinner dress

6. Finish our love banner

Tuesday:
1. Write thank you cards for gifts we've been receiving
2. Order escort cards pictures
3. Call the photo booth company and order the plastic sleeves for the photo strips

2. Wrap bridal party gifts
3. Meet with our DJ and finalize all our song choices

2. Manicure and pedicure
3. Get hair cut and colored

Saturday:
1. Finish anything that didn't get done

Sunday:
1. Last dance class
2. Hair trial

I know it doesn't look like I got a lot done today but I did lots of stuff that wasn't on the to-do list. And rather than add it to the list... just to cross it off -- I'm keeping mental notes of all the things I've done on the side. Trust me... it's a lot. For instance, I couldn't wrap the bridal party gifts because I had nothing to wrap them IN so I bought all the wrapping paper, tissue bags, and gift bags today. By the time I got home there was no time to wrap. See? Basically, it goes on like that for lots of things. And we're getting our marriage license tomorrow. ;)

Now, did you notice I crossed off "blog about my invitations"... well, here ya go:

Maybe you remember that I wasn't the happiest bride to-be when these arrived? But they slowly grew on me. And now, I thoroughly enjoy them and I'm happy with how they look. The response I got from people who received them was really positive and some seem to like them so much they still haven't mailed back their RSVP. ;)

Of course, everything went inside a white envelope that I didn't take a picture of because well, it was a white envelope. And we sent along a self-addressed, stamped enveloped for the response but I didn't take a picture of it because I'm a little lazy to blur out the address. But just know that we decided to have the envelope addressed to "The Future Mr. and Mrs. Duffy" and it was probably my favorite thing, ever.

That's all for now.

6.21.2011

25 days and counting

Last week, I went to the mall to buy wine glasses. You see -- along with our handfasting ceremony we have chosen to do a love letter & wine box ceremony. Have you heard of it?

Well, if you haven't -- it's pretty neat. I swear!

Basically, you get a box, 2 wine glasses, a bottle of wine and you each write love letters to the other (about how you fell in love, why you fell in love, the beginning, sweet things, you know... love!) and seal the letters! You shouldn't read them. Put everything in the box, and when the officiant is marrying you, he'll explain to your guests about how you've written these letters to each other and how you're about to seal the box...

"The Wine Box should be opened on your 5th wedding anniversary.

There is only one other reason the box should be opened before your anniversary. If there should come a time when you hit a bumpy road in your relationship, before you give up or make any irrational decisions, open the Wine Box. The hope is that there will never be a reason to have to open the box except on your anniversary!

Hit a rough spot in your relationship? Sit down together, open the box, uncork the wine and unseal the envelopes that you wrote for one another before your wedding, go to separate rooms and quietly read the love letter.

Even if you are not seeing eye-to-eye at that very moment, it will remind you of all the reasons you choose this person as your partner and all the things that helped shape the life they've created together. Never take your blessings of being together for granted."

I love the idea so much!

I went to Crate & Barrel to get wine glasses and they were on sale for $1.94! I bought two and went to Things Remembered.

I walked in, pretty sure of myself and my decision to have a D engraved on each glass (D for our last name, get it?). Well, the woman working there apparently didn't get it because she blurted "um, can I ask WHY you want a D?!"

So, I quickly changed my mind and told her that I guess I wanted Mr. & Mrs. engraved instead. Then she told me I couldn't have script writing because of some crazy reason... even though all the glasses on their shelf had script writing...

I was annoyed. I left the store and complained that I didn't want the glasses to say Mr. & Mrs.

My mom told me I should go back... Sean told me I should go back. So, after some lunch, I went back and told her that I only wanted a D... and she quickly said "yeah, fine, but it's still the same price".

So rude.

But, I picked up the glasses on Monday and even though they aren't the font I wanted... they're pretty. And I like them a lot. I swear. ;)

The list...

This week marks my last week of wedding planning. Everything needs to get done -- even seating. I start a pretty intense training program for work on the 27th and go every day up until the Wednesday of wedding week. So these last 7 days... are it. But I'm pretty confident that everything will be wrapped up. This is the plan:

Monday AKA today:
1. Go to the mall to pick up our engraved wine glasses for our wine box ceremony and have my name and wedding date embroidered on a piece of fabric for my dress and look for a rehearsal dinner dress
2. Spray paint all the table frames, add some sparkles and make "The songs requested at your table are" signs (which reminds me I still have to show you all our invitations...

Luckily, I have help!

Of course, all these days I have to practice walking in my shoes, work on my tan, practice my dance with Sean, keep up with my DVR...

The list really does go on...

6.17.2011

RSVPs!

Yesterday was the day we listed on our response cards to "kindly respond on or by".

I told you I was waiting for about 30 responses. Well I made a special trip to my parents house (where the RSVPs are being mailed to) because I wanted to check the mailbox and there were only 4. Four. Not 30...

But along with the 4... came this:

On the deadline, no less. ;)

6.16.2011

Not so DIY... anymore.

Okay, I know I've been engaged for 20 months forever. And you're probably thinking... "20 months... you should have had plenty of time to do DIY-projects". But before you judge: hear me out.

When I got engaged I had visions of ceremony programs, escort cards, fan favors, tissue pom-poms, wooden signs, framed engagement pictures, gerbera daisies, feather boutonnieres, menus, i spy games, cootie catcher ice breaker games -- I mean the list could go on and on. And most of it, were things I could have done myself (or with family).

But over the last 20 months, I've seen lots of things - some stuck out at me and I still want them at our wedding and others just kind of faded away.

For instance, the feather boutonnieres were impractical because mini calla lilies are included in our flower budget. The fan favors were unnecessary since we booked a photobooth and the pictures act as guest favors. Tissue pom-poms were at my bridal shower and that's how I want to remember them. See? Things just kind of went away -- and I'm absolutely fine with that.

And then, a few weeks ago, I was figuring out our must have photo list and I knew that Jacin over at Lovely Little Details has a list of ideas for this very thing. So I went over there and read her other tips for brides. And you know what she says?: It's okay to say "No" to DIY.

;) and that just puts a smile on my face.

Because, yes! I wanted ceremony programs. And yes, I think they are cute and helpful and something for guests to read. But are they going to appreciate the time and energy put into them? Honestly, probably not [do I blame them? no]. And that will really upset me. So, I'm not doing them.

And yes, I wanted matching menus. But guess what? Our venue does them... for "nothing" (I'm sure we're paying for them somewhere). And they look really nice and they'll tuck them into the napkin just how I wanted. So, thanks very much. Now I don't have to do them.

And, I wanted out of town bags. But it's not really practical because lots of people didn't book through our room block. So, I don't actually know who's staying and I don't want to miss anyone. So I'm not doing them and I'm okay with that, too. I think they're so cute and love them and if I was having a destination wedding or a wedding someplace where everyone was visiting and didn't know the area -- I would still be all over them. But, it's not case.

And, the list kind of goes on like that. Please, don't be disappointed.

You see... I'm still doing a lot. I'm still doing escort cards, and wooden signs, and black frames, and the photobooth will be adorable and our guest book is gorgeous and there will be a lot of personal touches. But it won't be plethora of things I had originally thought about 20 months ago.

Are we still DIY friends?

But anyways, not only does today mark ONE MONTH until our wedding BUT it marks the deadline for our RSVPs -- and we're still missing about 30 responses [most of which have a guest... so read: 60 people]. ;)

What are the chances of having all 30 in the mailbox this afternoon?!

6.15.2011

Paper Source Stamps

When we had our final details meeting last weekend, our wedding coordinator mentioned that it's usually a good idea to remind people of their meal choice by writing it lightly on the back of their escort card. Well... I went a step further. ;)

At Paper Source (have you been?!) they have these stamps:

...which we purchased today. ;)

And I plan on stamping the back of the escort cards. I don't think we'd necessarily have to write "beef" or "chicken" underneath but we were testing them out.

I like the black better... but the pink is really cute. So I think I'll use the black for all the options except for the kids meals (the chick!) -- and I'll use the pink ink for all the kids meals.

31 days!

6.14.2011

Lots to do.

As an end of year gift the parents of the kids in my class gave me a gift card to Macy's and this beautiful Vera Wang frame:

I think it'll be perfect for an engagement picture at the wedding! And of course, I'll put a wedding picture inside afterward. =) It was so sweet of them.

Since school is done, except for some end of year meetings -- I have some time to re-think, re-organize and figure out what the heck I WE should be doing between now and July 16th.

Here it is so far [Sean's helping with anything italicized]:

- confirm all vendors (send photo list to photographer, check on flowers, song list to DJ, check arrival times with everyone, order plastic sleeves from photobooth company, etc.) and pay all vendors
- pick-up dress and have my final fitting [7.01]
- final hair trial [6.26]
- get some type of "tan"
- make sure my something borrowed jewelry matches my dress
- practice walking in those heels... and dancing our dance

For Thursday, July 14th -

- send out rehearsal dinner invites
- buy outfits for myself & Sean for the rehearsal/dinner
- wrap all gifts: for parents, and for bridal party
- pick-up tuxes
- bring "EVERYTHING" to venue
- final payment due to the venue

For Friday, July 15th -

- confirm nail appointments
- get snacks and beverages to bring to nail salon
- pack for hotel
- check into hotel
- put together playlists to listen to

For Saturday, July 16th -

Ceremony:
- marriage license
- wine box ceremony: bottle of wine, wine glasses (engraved), love letters
- finalize vows
- finalize readings
- burn music CD to play
- buy Sean an inexpensive "fake" ring
- get my name and wedding date stitched (in blue) into my dress

Cocktail hour:
- escort cards: edit pictures, print pictures, buy envelopes, address envelopes, make stands, arrange alphabetically
- buy a few picture frames to display our engagement pictures
- put together signs (already have the frames): guitar guest book and card box
- paint Mr. and Mrs. wooden signs & Thank You signs

Reception:
- finish love banner
- buy 16 wooden frames: spray paint and write little blurbs about us to be displayed on each table
- buy stands for table numbers
- put together sign about the photobooth
- seating chart (alphabetized including meal choices)

It seems as though the to-do lists are just growing... even though things are getting accomplished. It's probably going to be like this for the next few weeks. It's exciting though!

Handfasting Ceremony

Some things Sean and I talked about early in the planning process regarding our ceremony was that we want it to be short (sorry!) and we want it to be meaningful (right?).

Neither of us are religious. A Catholic mass is out of the situation since we weren't confirmed and I just thought it would be easy for the ceremony and the reception to be in the same place. So it was decided.

Next, we met with our officiant who brought lots of different ideas to us about stuff we could do during our ceremony. I love the rose ceremony, and the sand ceremony and all those different things couples do but I wanted to do something that I've never seen done at a wedding.

So, when he mentioned the Handfasting ceremony we knew we needed it at our ceremony.

If you've never seen it done, or heard about what it is -- it's the ceremony that is the origin behind the phrase "tying the knot".

image

I found this website: My Spiritual Wedding. Basically they sum it up perfectly.

"The Handfasting Ceremony is an ancient Celtic tradition symbolizing the joining of two people in marriage. There are many versions of this gesture illustrating the union of husband and wife and is the origin of the phrase "tying the knot"... First, the officiant asks the couple to hold hands or place them side by side, then places the handfasting ribbons around the hands and wrists to "join" the couple."

I mean, come on! We need this because it's amazing and because we're going to Ireland for our honeymoon. It just fits!

You can pick the ribbons you want to use and each color ribbon represents something special you want in your marriage.
  • Red: passion, strength, lust, fertility
  • Orange: encouragement, attraction, kindness, plenty
  • Yellow: charm, confidence, joy, balance
  • Green: finances, fertility, charity, prosperity, health
  • Blue: tranquility, patience, devotion, sincerity
  • Purple: Power, piety, sanctity, sentimentality
  • Black: strength, wisdom, vision, success
  • White: purity, concentration, meditation, peace
  • Gray: neutrality, canceling, balance
  • Pink: unity, honor, truth, romance, happiness
  • Brown: earth, grounding, talent, telepathy, home
  • Silver: treasure, values, creativity, inspiration
  • Gold: energy, wealth, intelligence, longevity
I thought about making our own ribbon kit... just going to stores and buying ribbon but time got away from me. And honestly, I don't want to choose the colors. Maybe, I'm greedy but I want ALL this stuff in my marriage. Wouldn't you?!

So when I found the website My Spiritual Wedding and saw that they sell the Handfasting ribbon kits for $20... I bought it. I turned away from DIY... and I'm proud.

I placed my order Wednesday and got it on Friday. It's perfect... it came with a sweet note and suggested readings that go along with the ceremony, a guide to all the colors and it came in a cute little mesh bag. It's amazing. And I'm so excited!

;)

A quick update

Ready...

- I had my first dress fitting today. It was so exciting and fun and I love putting on my dress. It was decided the dress needs to be taken in a bit at the top and I need a bustle. But the length is perfect with my shoes. ;)

- Since the length is perfect I really need to start practicing walking in my shoes....

- We had our final details meeting today and I feel a lot less stressed. We talked logistics, food and money (eek!).

- I really want to have a signature drink (that's pink!) but don't actually drink much alcohol -- so I'm not too familiar with fancy drinks. Any ideas?

- Sean is tabbing out the song that I'll use to walk down the aisle. ;) it's beautiful!

That's it, for now.

6.11.2011

I was getting a little nervous...

Our honeymoon is about three weeks after our wedding and because we're leaving these here United States we need passports.

A few months ago, I searched for mine and success was had.

Sean seemed to think it was okay not to search for his... =)

But eventually got around to it and realized -- hmm, he had no idea where it was...

After a few more weeks he got around to applying for a passport. And after five more weeks the U.S. government notified him that "his picture had been damaged in the mail and he needed to send a new one". WHAT?! It took them five weeks to let us know this?!

I was nervous! Because the day is coming that we need that important little booklet and the wait time for passports is just one of those things... could take two weeks... it could take three months! Ya know?

But! Check out what came in the mail this morning!

Now, we're both ready! ;)

6.07.2011

39 days!

Woah, 39 days? Did you see that?!

I know I've been missing for about a week... I'm sorry. I'm a little overwhelmed with my google reader. Considering I didn't touch a computer since last Thursday my reader has hundreds (X4) posts unread and it's going to take me forever to catch up!

It occurred to me that I still haven't posted my invitations.

And when I just started scrolling through my pictures I realized I don't even have close-ups of them. So, here's a peek:

And I plan on posting more about them later in the week!

Tomorrow's post will be better. I promise! ;)

6.02.2011

Guess what!

So a few weeks ago, I entered Kamie's giveaway for those adorable "shoe stickers". You know the ones, right?! You put them on the bottom of your wedding shoes ;)

Well, I've been raving about them since... oh, we got engaged! And I couldn't find them!

But... I WON THE GIVEAWAY! Me! The person who never wins anything.

And they arrived in the mail this week.

Thank you! Thank you!

Something Old...

Sean and I are purchasing our actual wedding rings on our honeymoon in Ireland. So as stand in's for the ceremony we are planning to buy Sean a very inexpensive band -- just to go through the motions of exchanging rings. I guess it's a good thing this isn't going to be in a church... because our rings will surely not be "blessed". Whoops.

As for me...

I plan to use this ring as a "stand in" wedding ring AND my something old. ;)

It was my great-grandmother's ring and my aunt Christine (who also helped address my invitations!) has offered to let me borrow it! Yay!

Picking out all these little details makes everything so exciting!
